They’re Playing Our Song, a romantic comedy with book by comedic playwright Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, music by Marvin Hamlisch, premiered in Los Angeles in December 1978, then ran on Broadway in 1979 for 1082 performances. It was nominated for multiple Tony and Drama Desk awards. In Australia the show debuted in 1980 starring John Waters and Jacki Weaver, and has been seen in a regional touring production in recent years, and a 2006 Ensemble Theatre season starring Georgie Parker and Simon Burke.
The show, set in the late 1970s, is a small cast show, closer to a play with music, with dialogue by the two leads only. Six other players (3 male, 3 female) form a sort of “Greek Chorus” representing the voices inside Sonia and Vernon’s heads; they feature prominently in singing and dance but do not have dialogue.
